TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck east Taiwan on Thursday at 8:14 p.m., the Central Weather Administration reported.
The epicenter was located 24.7 kilometers south of Hualien County Hall, off the coast, with a depth of 15.1 kilometers. Taiwan uses an intensity scale from 1 to 7, with higher numbers indicating stronger quakes.
The strongest shaking, intensity level 4, was felt in Hualien and Nantou. Level 3 was reported in Taitung, Taichung, Yilan, Chiayi County, Changhua, and Yunlin.
Level 2 was felt in Miaoli, Hsinchu County, Hsinchu City, Chiayi City, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Taoyuan, New Taipei, and Taipei. The lowest intensity, level 1, was recorded in Pingtung and Penghu.
