TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The US state of Georgia passed a resolution earlier this month calling for deeper exchanges with Taiwan and supporting Taiwan’s international participation.
The state's House of Representatives approved a resolution supporting continued talks under the US-Taiwan Initiative on 21st-Century Trade and a US-Taiwan double taxation avoidance agreement. It also encouraged the state to open a trade office in Taiwan and send a trade delegation to explore more investment opportunities.
The resolution backed Taiwan's “meaningful participation” in global organizations such as the World Health Organization and the International Civil Aviation Organization. It also encouraged state officials to engage with their Taiwanese counterparts to “explore, enhance and deepen substantive relationships in issues that concern the State.”
State officials were urged to support the signing of an education cooperation agreement with Taiwan to increase Mandarin education exchanges and to use Taiwan’s Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language.
The resolution criticized China for misinterpreting UN Resolution 2758 to “obstruct Taiwan's contributions to the international community.” It also praised the close cooperation between Taiwan and the US to bolster democracy and uphold Indo-Pacific security.
