TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Wu Chih-chung (吳志中) hosted a luncheon on Wednesday in Taipei for a visiting cross-party delegation of Spanish lawmakers.
The foreign ministry said the six-member delegation was led by Spanish Congress of Deputies member Mikel Legarda Uriarte. The lawmakers are visiting Taiwan to learn more about the country’s political development and to strengthen parliamentary exchanges.
Wu said Taiwan and Spain share common principles such as freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights, CNA reported.
Wu also noted that 2026 marks the 400th anniversary of the first recorded contact between Taiwan and Spain. Spain established settlements in northern Taiwan in the 17th century.
He said economic relations between Taiwan and Spain have grown steadily in recent years. Taiwan hopes to deepen cooperation with Spain in sectors such as semiconductors, renewable energy, smart technology, and digital industries, UDN reported.
“Spain values Taiwan’s democratic achievements and vibrant civil society,” Legarda said.
The delegation will meet with other Taiwanese officials and visit several institutions before returning home.
