TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Pingtung County Government said Monday that the county’s fruit has entered Japanese supermarkets and a Tokyo hotel as Taiwan expands overseas agricultural sales.
CNA reported that Japanese supermarket chain Ozeki has begun selling Pingtung premium jujubes, pineapples, and dragon fruit in its stores. The Sheraton Miyako Hotel Tokyo has also selected the fruit as welcome fruit in its Sheraton Club lounge.
“The county has promoted branding and quality control in recent years to build a strong reputation among Japanese consumers,” Pingtung County Commissioner Chou Chun-mi (周春米) said. Pingtung produces more than 100,000 tonnes of pineapples annually, with over 10,000 tonnes exported to Japan each year, per Liberty Times.
Ozeki, a supermarket chain with about 42 stores in Japan’s Kanto region, is known for selling fresh products with strict quality standards. “The sale of Pingtung fruit shows growing trust in Taiwan’s agricultural products among Japanese consumers,” the county government said.
Officials added that earlier partnerships with retailers in Fukuoka and Tokyo have brought Pingtung fruit into more than 800 supermarkets across Japan. Cooperation with Japan’s Kintetsu Group this year has further expanded the presence of Taiwan fruit in hotels and retail outlets, UDN reported.
