TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) said he attended Taiwan’s World Baseball Classic match in Japan at his own expense after opposition politicians questioned whether he used public funds to make the trip.
Following Cho’s appearance at the match between Taiwan and Czechia in Tokyo, the KMT legislative caucus questioned the funding for Cho’s charter flight. On Sunday, Cho said in a media interview it was a private trip taken at personal expense, reported CNA.
The premier said the only purpose of the trip to Japan was to cheer for Team Taiwan with his fellow countrymen.
In response, the KMT called on Cho to share details of the trip and documents to prove he did not use taxpayers money to fund it. On Sunday, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) was asked about the trip and said the government should provide a clear explanation, reported UDN.
The TPP’s legislative caucus also criticized Cho’s trip to Japan while the government is negotiating the authorization of three major arms purchases from the US, reported CNA. The TPP questioned whether the premier really used his own funds to pay for the flights and all the security personnel.
