TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Deputy Legislative Speaker Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) has arrived in Australia to attend World Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce events.
Chiang said Taiwan and Australia maintain close economic and trade ties. Taiwan is Australia’s seventh-largest trading partner, he said, while Australia ranks as Taiwan’s eighth-largest trading partner, per CNA. Australia possesses abundant energy, mineral, and agricultural resources, Chiang said.
Chiang will meet with Australian officials, industry representatives, and think tanks to exchange views on key issues such as regional security and supply chain cooperation.
The two countries have maintained close cooperation in education and cultural exchanges, particularly through the working holiday agreement, which has been in place for more than 20 years, Chiang said. More than 200,000 youths have traveled to Australia to work in various sectors, he said.
The deputy speaker said he planned to maximize his visit by promoting parliamentary diplomacy and bringing the two countries closer together.
Last month, the Australian naval vessel HMAS Toowoomba passed through the Taiwan Strait. The Australian defense ministry said the ship made a “routine transit" in the South China Sea.
