TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan defeated Czechia 14–0 in seven innings at the World Baseball Classic on Saturday.
Taiwan started US-based pitcher Chuang Chen Chung-ao (莊陳仲敖) against Czech left-hander Jan Novak, per CNA. Yu Chang (張育成) led the offense with three hits and four RBIs.
Taiwan took the lead in the top of the first inning. Cheng Tsung-che (鄭宗哲) and Stuart Fairchild singled before both scored on a Czech throwing error during a double-steal attempt, and Chang added an RBI single to make it 2–0.
Yu Chang escaped trouble in the bottom of the first inning. After allowing a leadoff double, he struck out three consecutive batters to leave the runner stranded.
Taiwan broke the game open in the second inning. Chen Chen-wei (陳晨威) doubled and two walks loaded the bases before Fairchild blasted a grand slam to extend the lead to 6–0.
Chuang exited with two outs in the bottom of the third inning and was replaced by left-hander Lin Yu-min (林昱珉). Taiwan added two more runs in the fourth when Cheng and Fairchild walked, executed a double steal, and Yu Chang drove them in with a single.
Taiwan extended its lead in the fifth inning. Lin Chia-cheng (林家正) and Chiang Kun-yu (江坤宇) singled before Chen hit a sacrifice fly to make it 9–0.
The offense surged again in the sixth inning. Fairchild walked and hits by Yu Chang and Chen helped push Taiwan’s lead to 14–0.
Taiwan’s bullpen sealed the win. Lin Kai-wei (林凱威) retired the side in order in the sixth inning, and Tseng Chun-yueh (曾峻岳) did the same in the seventh as the game ended under the mercy rule.
Taiwan now has one win and two losses and will face off against South Korea on Sunday.
