TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) attended Taiwan’s 14-0 World Baseball Classic victory against the Czech Republic in Tokyo, reports said Saturday.
Cho is the first Taiwan premier to visit Japan while still in office since the two countries broke off diplomatic relations in 1972, per CNA. He was reportedly accompanied by Sports Minister Lee Yang (李洋) and by Taiwan’s envoy to Japan, Lee I-yang (李逸洋), after flying in from Taiwan on Saturday morning.
Taiwanese fans greeted Cho with shouts of “hello premier” and “Team Taiwan,” with the premier responding twice by also shouting “Team Taiwan” and by shaking hands with fans.
Saturday’s game at the Tokyo Dome marked Taiwan’s first victory at this year’s WBC after defeats against Australia and Japan. Team Taiwan will face South Korea on Sunday morning.
