TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taichung Aquarium said Friday that three pairs of Magellanic penguins laid eggs this week.
After a December health check that found the aquarium’s penguins all in good health, six of the birds began displaying mating behaviors in early February. Aquarium staff assisted in pairing them, resulting in four eggs from the three pairs, reported CNA.
One pair of birds laid two eggs, which is normal for the species. The aquarium has not yet confirmed whether all four eggs have been successfully fertilized, but it will conduct tests soon to determine if they are viable.
The incubation period for Magellanic penguins is usually about 40 days. It's hoped that all of the eggs can be incubated naturally within the penguin enclosure, per CNA. Temperature, humidity and water quality will all be strictly monitored to ensure the best environment for successful incubation.
Taichung Aquarium reminds visitors who view the penguins to remain quiet since loud noises can easily frighten the birds and possibly endanger the unhatched chicks.
