TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Guam Governor Lourdes Leon Guerrero signed a sister city agreement with Kaohsiung in the Taiwanese city Thursday.
The city government described the ceremony as a milestone in its efforts to expand relations with the US, per CNA. Guerrero visited Kaohsiung last year.
Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) said he discussed the full-scale development of tourism and travel with the governor. They also exchanged views about cooperation in the fields of smart healthcare, education, and culture.
Guerrero praised Kaohsiung for the advanced development of its semiconductor and fish farming sectors, while underlining that she wanted more tourists to visit each other’s countries.
For two years, Guam has participated in the Sunshine Island Vibe Fest in Kaohsiung, and on Friday, Guerrero is scheduled to attend the opening ceremony. The event also features Thailand, the Philippines, and Japan.
Kaohsiung added it was planning to expand and deepen partnership relations with US cities through international events. Education, culture, smart cities, and business transformation are topics the city is interested in, officials said.
