TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 5 earthquake hit southern Taiwan on Tuesday at 7:52 p.m.
The quake’s epicenter was located 40.6 kilometers northeast of Tainan City Hall. It had a focal depth of 5.9 km, according to the Central Weather Administration.
Taiwan uses a scale of 1 to 7 to measure a quake's intensity at a specific location. The quake registered a 4 in Tainan and Chiayi County. Kaohsiung, Chiayi, and Yunlin cities reported an intensity of 3. Nantou, Changhua, Penghu, and Taichung counties experienced an intensity of 2.
Taitung, Pingtung, Hualien, and Miaoli counties reported an intensity of 1.
