TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency will launch a nationwide Tree Planting Month sapling giveaway on Wednesday, distributing more than 90,000 saplings of 98 native Taiwanese tree and plant species.
The agency, along with its regional branches, the Aerial Survey and Remote Sensing Branch, and the Alishan Forest Railway and Cultural Heritage Office, will host 165 giveaway events, per CNA. Based on the diverse ecological environments and forest characteristics of each region, suitable native tree species have been selected to promote afforestation.
For example, the Hsinchu Branch will offer Japanese honeysuckle, the toad lily, beautiful deutzia, and Japanese camellia. The Taichung Branch will provide Taiwan trident maple and rough-leaved holly.
The Chiayi Branch will distribute mountain pepper, maidenhair fern, and Alishan ardisia. The Pingtung Branch will offer roundleaf chastetree, Japanese spindle, Fukien tea tree, and Portia tree.
The Taitung Branch will provide Okinawan hibiscus, Bredia dulanica, Taitung persimmon, Taiwan firethorn, and Chinese box-orange. The Hualien Branch will distribute Crossostephium and Hypericum geminiflorum.
The Yilan Branch will offer Berberis japonica, among others. All saplings will be wrapped in eco-friendly pots containing soil balls, and recipients are asked to bring their own reusable bags or containers.
Some events require participants to present one to three paper or electronic receipts from January to March, with limits on the number of saplings per person. At other events, saplings can be obtained by lining up directly or by participating in activities such as blood donation.
