TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Yilan County’s Public Health Bureau on Tuesday ordered renowned bakery Yih Shun Shiuan to recall a batch of products after a customer reported finding plastic film inside a cheese pastry.
UDN reported Tuesday that a Kaohsiung man surnamed Li (李) spent more than NT$3,000 (US$94) on cheese pastries and cake rolls as Lunar New Year gifts. He said he bit into a piece of plastic about the size of an NT$10 coin while eating one pastry, adding that he feels fine but worries smaller fragments may have been consumed by relatives and friends.
“The plastic likely came from a raw material bag that accidentally fell into the mixture during production,” Yih Shun Shiuan said, apologizing. It offered to recall the affected products, send replacements, and provide complimentary pastries as compensation, FTV News reported.
Yilan County Health Bureau Director Hsu Nai-wei (徐迺維) said inspectors determined the foreign object was likely packaging film from raw materials. Authorities ordered the remaining 23 products from the same batch removed from shelves and found peeling ceiling paint and other sanitation violations during the inspection.
The bureau issued a notice requiring improvements within a set deadline. Failure to comply could result in fines ranging from NT$60,000 to NT$200 million, and in serious cases, authorities may suspend operations or revoke the company’s registration, CNA reported.
