TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Tainan City Government said Tuesday that the city will host a strawberry festival starting Saturday at Shanhua Brewery, with events running through April 5.
The opening event will run from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, marking the launch of the month-long festival. The festival is organized by the Shanhua District Office and aims to promote local agriculture and tourism.
“Shanhua has about 1.6 hectares of strawberry farms and is one of the southernmost strawberry-growing areas in Taiwan,” Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) said. Strawberries grow best at temperatures between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius, and cooler weather this year delayed the harvest but improved the fruit’s flavor and texture, CNA reported.
“Many people associate strawberries with Miaoli County, but Shanhua’s produce is comparable in quality,” Huang said. He added that Shanhua strawberries are sweet and juicy and can be eaten fresh or made into products such as strawberry daifuku and dried strawberries, while the local brewery has also developed strawberry beer as a specialty item.
The district office said the opening day will feature a strawberry-themed market with nearly 80 vendors selling local products. Visitors can join a stamp collection activity, with 300 limited-edition metal badges available, and receive acrylic stands designed by a local illustrator after completing game challenges, per Youth Daily News.
Organizers will also offer DIY activities and photo booth experiences, as well as limited quantities of strawberry beer and strawberry ice cream sponsored by the Shanhua Farmers’ Association. Visitors who visit participating farms during the festival can receive a 20% discount on fruit picking, per FTV News.
