TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday condemned Iran’s recent attacks in the Middle East but said there are currently no plans to evacuate Taiwanese citizens.
Deputy Foreign Minister Wu Chih-Chung (吳志中) said the safety of overseas Taiwanese is paramount and that representative offices are closely monitoring the situation, per CNA. From the ministry’s standpoint, Wu said, the US and Israel are allies, and Taiwan condemns Iran’s indiscriminate attacks on other countries.
Wu also said there are no evacuation plans at this time because other countries have not withdrawn their nationals. Representative offices have been contacting overseas Taiwanese and travelers to check on their safety, and the Israeli government has expressed that it will assist in ensuring the safety of overseas citizens, so there are currently no issues.
He added that with portions of regional airspace closed, Taiwanese citizens are being advised to remain in place until flights resume, as personal safety remains the overriding concern.
For those wishing to depart by land, the ministry will provide assistance. Two Taiwanese nationals have already left Israel overland for Jordan and Kuwait, though most in the region believe staying put is the safer option.
Wu said that given the broader international stance, the ministry will continue advising Taiwanese abroad to remain in secure locations and depart once the airspace reopens.
