TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taichung and the German city of Dresden have agreed to deepen cooperation in the semiconductor and machinery sectors following talks between local officials.
According to the Taichung City Government, Dresden Deputy Mayor Jan Pratzka met Taichung Economic Development Bureau Director-General Chang Feng-yuan (張峯源) on Sunday. Pratzka praised Taichung’s complete supply chain in semiconductors and precision machinery.
“Taichung is a key hub for machinery, precision machinery, semiconductors and tool machines in Taiwan,” Chang said. He added that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has launched an investment plan in Taichung to build four advanced 1.4-nanometer wafer fabs, which are expected to be completed in 2028.
Pratzka said Dresden is the core city of “Silicon Saxony,” Europe’s largest microelectronics cluster. He noted the region produces nearly one-third of Europe’s chips and provides more than 70,000 high-tech jobs.
The bureau said both cities face similar challenges in water resources, energy supply, and labor as their industries expand. During the talks, they shared strategies including industrial water projects, new substations, reclaimed water plants, and natural gas-fired power units to ensure stable supplies.
Officials also discussed semiconductor talent training and long-term infrastructure planning to support future growth. Industry groups in Saxony expressed interest in expanding cooperation with Taichung associations and invited Taiwanese firms to attend Silicon Saxony Days and Trumpf Intech 2026.
