TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Analysts have urged Taiwan to learn from the US missile strikes in Iran on Saturday.
Institute for National Defense and Security Research researcher Su Tzu-yun (蘇紫雲) pointed out that Iran’s air defense system lacked integration, per CNA. The communication protocols of Russia’s S-300 systems are incompatible with Chinese equipment, he said.
Su explained that while Iran’s main air defense assets, including China-made YLC-series anti-stealth radars and HQ-series surface-to-air missiles, claim the ability to detect stealth aircraft, their anti-jamming capabilities were overcome in actual combat.
He stressed that in the face of Beijing’s combined missile and drone threats, developing the “T-Dome” is urgent. Taiwan’s military advantage lies in its battle-tested Patriot missile systems and US-made radars, which possess strong anti-jamming capabilities.
Su said Taiwan should accelerate integration of domestically produced weapons and US-made systems into an Integrated Battle Command System, significantly enhancing engagement efficiency to counter modernized airborne threats.
Retired Colonel Chou Yu-ping (周宇平), former head of the Air Force Surveillance Warning Center, said that given the vast disparity in military strength, Iranian fighter jets were shot down as soon as they took off, demonstrating the US strategy of achieving maximum effect with minimal force deployment.
He stressed that the key to such operations lies in possessing a “comprehensive and precise intelligence network.” This is an area Taiwan’s military should strengthen, he said, adding that integration gaps exposed in Iran’s air defense are also lessons Taiwan must study closely.
