TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Saturday said he is closely monitoring developments following a US strike on Iran and has instructed government agencies to track the situation and take precautionary measures, per CNA.
Lai said he received a briefing from his national security team and that Taiwan is maintaining close contact with global allies while working to ensure the safety of Taiwanese citizens in the region.
According to multiple media reports, Iran retaliated with missiles and drones against Israel and launched missiles targeting US military facilities in the Middle East.
In posts on X and later on Facebook Saturday evening, Lai said the government has activated relevant response mechanisms to safeguard Taiwanese nationals overseas and is maintaining close communication with like-minded countries and global partners.
He said that regardless of changes in the international situation, protecting public safety and safeguarding national interests remain the government’s top priorities.
Lai added he has directed government agencies to carefully assess potential impacts, particularly fluctuations in international raw material and energy prices and their effects on Taiwan’s economic, financial, and livelihood stability, while preparing contingency plans in advance.
He emphasized that the government will continue to monitor developments closely, respond prudently and steadily, and ensure national security and social stability.
