TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — DPP Spokesperson Wu Cheng (吳崢) on Friday accused KMT Chair Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) of misrepresenting the 228 Massacre, calling it a disservice to victims and their families.
Wu said Cheng’s interpretation decontextualizes and distorts the events of 228, showing disregard for the period under KMT authoritarian rule, per CNA. He emphasized that such remarks dishonor the memory of those who suffered and the families affected.
On the eve of Peace Memorial Day, Cheng described 228 as Taiwan’s first major post–World War II democratic movement and also called it a tragedy, per Newtalk.
However, Cheng claimed that 228 has been turned into a political tool for infighting, calling it a disgrace for the current generation of Taiwanese. Wu said these comments reflect a troubling trend of using historical events for political gain.
Wu cited Cheng’s previous controversial statements, including her remarks on Russian President Vladimir Putin and her visit to former general Wu Shi (吴石), later convicted of espionage for China. He said these examples show a pattern of misjudgment and historical insensitivity.
Wu concluded that political leaders must treat historical tragedies with respect. Misrepresenting events like 228 undermines the dignity of those who suffered, he said.
