TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan's Supreme Court on Thursday handed down a 55-year-8-month prison term for former National Fire Agency Director-General Huang Chi-min (黃季敏) on bribery and money laundering charges.
Mirror Media said Huang took bribes totaling NT$20.76 million (US$665,000) from vendors during 2002-2006 procurement deals for radios and disaster systems. The court upheld seven counts, including four bribery cases, while four other counts were remanded for retrial as the high court had erred in fact-finding.
CNA reported that Huang was charged in 2012 and 2013. Twenty others were implicated in the case.
His final prison term will be determined by the Taiwan High Court. Prosecutors have been notified in case Huang tries to flee the country.
Raids on Huang's home had uncovered 20 kilograms of gold bars and cash, per Mirror Media.
