TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Thursday expressed confidence that quantum technology will be at the core of the next-generation computing revolution and said Taiwan is developing related technologies.
Lai highlighted his 10 major AI infrastructure project plan during a meeting with John M. Martinis, who was awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in physics, per the Presidential Office. The project includes quantum technology as a key development priority.
Lai said that Taiwan is promoting a national quantum initiative. Last month, Academia Sinica unveiled its domestically developed 20-qubit superconducting quantum computer, symbolizing Taiwan’s advancement into the top tier of global competition and marking a crucial starting point in large-scale quantum chip fabrication, the president said
Taiwan possesses a complete industrial supply chain and highly skilled engineering talent, he added.
The president hoped that, with Martinis’ expertise and vision, Taiwan could deepen exchanges with leading international research institutions and create an even stronger research environment through expanded global cooperation.
