TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Both chambers of the Iowa Legislature passed pro-Taiwan resolutions in recent days.
In the House resolution, adopted on Wednesday, representatives voiced support for Taiwan’s participation in global organizations and condemned any efforts to undermine Taiwan’s sovereign status or distort UNGA Resolution 2758. The resolution reaffirmed Iowa’s “strong support for continued peace, stability, and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait” and called for a deeper partnership between Taiwan and Iowa. Representatives hoped for stronger economic and people-to-people ties in the future.
The resolution acknowledged Taiwan’s efforts to promote freedom and human rights, as well as to establish a non-Chinese supply chain.
Lei Yen-feng (類延峰), director-general of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago, expressed gratitude for Iowa’s longstanding friendship and its concrete actions in support of Taiwan, per CNA.
Lei said agricultural cooperation between Taiwan and Iowa continues to grow, with multiple agricultural delegations from Taiwan visiting the state. Over the next four years, Taiwanese companies will purchase US$10 billion (NT$312.6 billion) worth of soybeans, corn, wheat, and beef from the US. This strengthens the food supply chain security and helps American farmers, including those in Iowa, mitigate the impact of global trade disruptions, Lei said.
He added that the bilateral partnership has deepened since the signing of an economic and trade memorandum of understanding in 2024.
