TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei Veterans General Hospital and National Taiwan University Hospital have entered the global top 250 in Newsweek's “World’s Best Hospitals 2026," placing 174th and 249th.
The rankings began in March 2019 and are published in collaboration with international research firm Statista, per CNA. This year, over 2,500 hospitals from 32 countries were evaluated based on medical expert opinions, hospital quality indicators, and patient satisfaction surveys.
Taiwan’s hospitals were first included in the top 250 global rankings in 2023, when NTUH ranked 249th. In 2024 and 2025, TVGH was the only Taiwanese hospital listed, placing 218th and 208th.
Yu Chong-jen (余忠仁), superintendent of NTUH Hsinchu Branch, told CNA that the evaluation covers medical care quality, patient feedback, and international engagement. He said the overall improvement of Taiwanese hospitals shows they have reached a level of self-improvement and global visibility.
Yu compared the ranking to an exam, where some criteria are based on the hospital’s measurable performance, while others involve subjective assessment. He added that NTUH can still expand international connections, such as collaborations and training foreign personnel, and that recognition of its research can further boost visibility.
Chen Wei-ming (陳威明), superintendent of TVGH, said the hospital has been focused on internationalization in recent years, forging close ties with major institutions such as New York University, Mayo Clinic, and leading hospitals in Japan and South Korea. He said that the hospital aimed to reach the top 200 this year with plans to continue advancing.
Chen said that Taiwan’s medical capabilities are on par with those of other countries, but as a non-English-speaking nation, Taiwanese hospitals are at a disadvantage in these rankings. He expressed hope that more Taiwanese hospitals will be added to the list in the future.
In addition to the global top 250, the World’s Best Hospitals series also ranks hospitals within individual countries. Taiwan’s top five are TVGH, NTUH, Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital.
Ranks six through ten are China Medical University Hospital, National Cheng Kung University Hospital, Kaohsiung Medical University Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital, Cathay General Hospital, and Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital.
