TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The National Science and Technology Center said Monday that its Center for Disaster Reduction won a 2026 UN-backed Zero Project Award for its inclusive evacuation system.
The NSTC said the award marks the center’s second Zero Project win, following its first recognition in 2023, per CNA. This year’s Zero Project competition drew 586 entries from 93 countries, with 82 winners selected from 51 nations.
The platform integrates scientific models with national data, including historical typhoons, flood risks, and household registration records. It helps local governments assess risks and evacuation needs and allocate accessible and special-needs facilities.
The system has been adopted across all 22 counties and cities in Taiwan and was used more than 27,000 times for scenario planning between 2020 and mid-2025. A training program with universities and local governments strengthened local capacity and ensured the platform evolves based on frontline feedback.
The NSTC said the award underscores international recognition of Taiwan’s disaster prevention capabilities. It pledged to deepen innovation and societal resilience.
