TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) called on the National Security Bureau to prevent China from interfering in the year-end local elections, reports said Tuesday.
During a Lunar New Year visit to the intelligence agency, Lai listed combating united front tactics, infiltration and annexation as priorities, per CNA. During the campaign for the Nov. 28 election, China is certain to use fake news, fake opinion polls, underground gambling, trade, and tourism to disrupt the vote, he said.
The NSB said it had set up a special task force to prevent election interference. The agency said it would continue strengthening cooperation with other departments to ensure the stability of Taiwan’s democratic election system.
The NSB said the global community has also paid attention to security risks posed by China’s growing international activities. As Taiwan is on the frontline in the fight against the expansion of authoritarianism, agency officials conducted 250 rounds of talks with representatives from other countries last year to strengthen regional security.
Even more intelligence exchanges and closer security cooperation are expected in the future.
