TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Environment is encouraging the public and businesses to replace gasoline-powered cars and scooters with electric vehicles, offering subsidies of up to NT$16,000 (US$500) per vehicle.
To advance Taiwan’s net-zero emissions goal, the ministry continues to promote its vehicle replacement and carbon-offset program, per ETtoday. Replacing a gas-powered scooter with an electric scooter qualifies for subsidies starting at NT$3,300 per unit, including up to NT$2,000 in carbon-reduction purchase incentives, a NT$300 recycling reward, and an additional NT$1,000 air-pollution reduction subsidy.
Government agencies and local governments, including the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Tainan City Government, and the Kaohsiung City Government, have joined the program. In addition to carbon-reduction incentives, air-pollution reduction payments for cars and light-duty trucks vary by locality, ranging from NT$2,000 to NT$5,100, and eligible applicants may apply for both simultaneously.
Subsidies for cars and light trucks vary by fuel type. Replacing diesel vehicles with electric models can earn up to NT$16,000, while hybrids receive up to NT$8,000. Gasoline vehicles can earn up to NT$13,000 for electric replacements and up to NT$6,500 for hybrids.
Since the program was launched in 2022, a total of 124,798 fossil-fuel vehicles had been replaced by the end of 2025, reducing 529,212 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. The ministry said 51 development projects nationwide are currently required to implement greenhouse gas offsets, with more organizations expected to join the program.
