TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Strong Bow missile has completed operational evaluation and will enter mass production once the Legislative Yuan passes the proposed NT$1.25 trillion (US$39.7 billion) special defense budget.
The long-range air defense system can intercept missiles at altitudes of 70 kilometers, Liberty Times reported. It is also equipped with a new Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar with a detection range exceeding 500 km, substantially strengthening Taiwan’s early warning capabilities against Chinese ballistic missiles and hypersonic weapons.
A military official said that the Strong Bow’s AESA radar offers stronger anti-jamming capabilities and improved multi-target processing performance. It can accurately track Chinese ballistic missiles in the early phase of launch, they said.
The official said that the Strong Bow would expand Taiwan’s air defense coverage to the high-altitude layer. The long-range detection capability of the AESA radar can also be networked with the Air Force’s Leshan long-range early warning radar, as well as naval and air force radar systems, significantly shortening the decision chain from detection to intercept launch.
Additionally, the Strong Bow can be integrated with the Sky Bow III missile system. A central command center can link to dozens of missile launch units and incorporate AI-assisted decision-making functions.
Based on battlefield conditions, the command center can recommend engagement options, prioritizing either the Sky Bow III or the Strong Bow missile system for interception, per Liberty Times. This assists operators in making the most appropriate decisions quickly under high-pressure combat scenarios.
