TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A 41-year-old worker died in an industrial accident on Saturday at an Innolux factory in Tainan’s Southern Taiwan Science Park, prompting authorities to shut down machinery of the same model and launch a safety investigation.
The Tainan Fire Bureau received a report at 8:46 p.m. that a male worker had been pulled inside a machine and lost consciousness at the facility, per CNA. Firefighters found the man with a laceration on his forehead and no vital signs, and he was transported to Chi Mei Medical Center’s Yongkang branch, where he was pronounced dead at 11 p.m.
The Southern Taiwan Science Park Bureau conducted a labor inspection at the site following the incident. A preliminary investigation found that the employee was operating the device when a suspected malfunction in the safety interlock system occurred.
The park administration said the case breached Article 57 of the Regulations for Occupational Safety and Health Equipment and Measures, which requires employers to shut down machinery or its feeding function when servicing equipment that poses a risk to workers. As the incident constitutes a major occupational accident, identical equipment has been suspended pending a formal investigation under Ministry of Labor guidelines.
