TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A court in Germany has temporarily banned the sale of some PCs and desktops by Taiwan brands Acer and Asus over a patent dispute with Finland’s Nokia Corporation.
The conflict involved High Efficiency Video Coding, a technology facilitating the compression of videos to improve streaming. The two Taiwanese companies announced that as a result of the ruling by a Munich court, they had temporarily closed down their websites and online stores in Germany, per CNA.
Acer Inc. said it was confident about its legal position since it had already received a favorable ruling from a court in the UK. The company said it had completed preparations for a technology redesign allowing to resume the sale of computer products in the near future. The case was unlikely to have a major negative impact on its business and financial situation, Acer said.
Asustek Computer Inc., the company behind the Asus brand, emphasized that its after-sales service in Germany continued as normal. The company said it was considering the necessary legal steps to achieve a quick solution to the issue.
