TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the groundbreaking ceremony for a joint venture between Foxconn Technology and HCL in the state of Uttar Pradesh, reports said Saturday.
The facility is an outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing center, the Liberty Times reported. The plant, to be managed by the India Chip Pvt. Ltd. joint venture, will be built by the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority.
According to an Indian government news release, the project will provide a major boost to the country’s semiconductor ecosystem, fostering innovation, technology transfer, and skill development. Modi is set to participate in Saturday’s ceremony via video conferencing.
The project is likely to generate thousands of jobs for engineers, technicians, and professionals while boosting employment in the related supply chain. Total investment in the plant amounted to NT$129 billion (US$4 billion).
The Indian government said the HCL-Foxconn joint venture fits in its plans to turn the country into a trusted destination for the manufacturing of high-end electronics and semiconductors.
