TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Utah State Senate on Thursday unanimously approved a resolution supporting Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.
The resolution, introduced by Utah state Sen. Scott Sandall, also calls for stronger exchanges in religious, economic, and cultural fields, per CNA. It marks the 47th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act.
The resolution notes that Utah and Taiwan established a sister-state relationship in 1980. It also says Taiwan was the first country to establish a reciprocal driver’s license agreement with Utah.
Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco Director General Wu Chih-hsiang (伍志翔) thanked the Utah State Senate on behalf of the Taiwan government. He praised the resolution as a demonstration of strong Taiwan–Utah relations.
Utah and Taiwan formalized the sister-state relationship in 1980, further deepening cultural exchanges. Since 1956, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the state’s largest denomination, has sent 43,000 missionaries to Taiwan.
