TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan on Friday donated NT$6.31 million (US$200,000) to support flood relief efforts in Washington State after historic flooding in December.
The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Seattle made the donation on behalf of the government, per CNA. Lieutenant Governor Denny Heck attended the ceremony and thanked Taiwan for its support.
TECO Seattle Director General Lin Mei-cheng (林美呈) handed the funds to the American Red Cross Northwest Region, which will oversee distribution.
Estimates showed the flooding displaced more than 100,000 residents and damaged nearly 4,000 homes. Parts of US Route 2 were temporarily closed and recovery efforts are ongoing.
Lin said Taiwan understands the impact of natural disasters and the long recovery process they require. She said Taiwan empathizes with Washington State and hopes the assistance will help residents rebuild their lives.
In addition to the government donation, overseas Taiwanese groups in the US contributed to relief efforts. The Seattle branch of Tzu Chi provided supplies and raised nearly NT$3.79 million.
Heck thanked the people and government of Taiwan for their generosity, saying Washington State values Taiwan’s friendship and looks forward to cooperation.
