TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Any attempt to isolate Taiwan would lead to a global economic, strategic, and moral disaster, former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday.
She addressed a Taiwan workshop at The World Forum in Berlin by video link, CNA reported. She called on democratic nations to take action to prevent the expansion of authoritarianism.
Pelosi described Taiwan and Ukraine as “two chapters from the same story.” She said authoritarian regimes are testing whether the global community will allow military force to change the existing order and let threats restrict freedom.
Taiwan is a vibrant democracy and an important economic engine, she said. Any attempt to isolate, threaten, or invade Taiwan is not merely a regional issue, but would entail a global disaster.
Protecting Taiwan is not provocative behavior, Pelosi said, but is necessary to prevent conflict. Democracy can only survive if democratic nations act together based on a clear moral and ethical stance, she added.
