TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A 9-year-old boy died Thursday after a swan-shaped pedal boat overturned on Liyu Lake in Hualien during the Lunar New Year holiday.
The accident occurred around 2 p.m., about 20 meters from the lake’s northern shore, when a family group riding the boat was thrown into the water, per CNA. The boy had been aboard with his parents, aunt, and grandfather, while other relatives remained onshore.
Bystanders and nearby water recreation operators moved quickly to help. Four adults were pulled out first, but rescuers realized a child was still missing. Witnesses said those who had been freed shouted that the boy remained trapped inside the upturned craft.
One operator entered the lake and forced the vessel to tilt, creating space to reach the cabin area. The child was retrieved roughly 10 minutes after the boat flipped and was not breathing. CPR was performed on shore until paramedics arrived, but he was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Local police said all five passengers were wearing life jackets. Investigators are examining whether heavy holiday boat traffic or waves from a passing speedboat destabilized the craft, per the report. Authorities urged visitors to stay alert to changing water conditions when engaging in lake activities.
