TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Penghu Airport reported delays Thursday as about 5,000 people prepared to leave the island county before the end of the Lunar New Year holiday.
The return trip was complicated by technical issues on some flights that required repairs, per CNA. Some planes were more than one hour late landing or taking off.
According to airport officials, 5,015 travelers had booked seats on 57 flights, including two Airbus A321 aircraft and two Boeing 738 aircraft. More than 50 people registered for standby spots on flights to Kaohsiung and Taichung. A warning light on a flight from Penghu to Taipei caused a delay of more than one hour.
The county government will open a special desk at the airport from Friday to Monday to assist Penghu residents with finding seats on flights to Taiwan’s main island. In addition to providing information about standby opportunities, staff will also try to arrange extra flights if needed.
The Feb. 14-22 Lunar New Year holiday is a peak period for air travel. Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport reported a single-day record of more than 169,000 travelers on the first day of the holiday last Saturday.
