TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Former President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Tuesday announced their support for DPP New Taipei mayoral candidate Su Chiao-hui (蘇巧慧).
Lai joined Su in the morning at Zhongfu Temple and Zhaoling Temple in Wanli District, New Taipei, where they offered Lunar New Year prayers and distributed lucky bags, per CNA.
Lai said he returns to Wanli every Lunar New Year to greet hometown supporters. He praised Su’s performance in the legislature, adding that she would achieve even more if elected mayor.
Tsai accompanied Su to Hesheng Temple in Wugu District as well as Cihui Temple and Jieyun Temple in Banqiao District. Supporters packed the venues, with many asking for photos, per Liberty Times.
Calling Su the strongest candidate, Tsai quipped that people once described her as former Premier Su Tseng-chang’s (蘇貞昌) daughter, but now say Su is her father, stressing her importance. She added that with more women in leadership, she hopes Su can guide New Taipei forward.
Su thanked Lai and Tsai for their support and urged opposition parties to review the general and special defense budgets in the new legislative session to safeguard Taiwan’s security.
