TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Nearly 1,500 travelers are expected to leave Matsu on Tuesday after dense fog stranded passengers and wiped out most flights over the weekend.
Over Sunday and Monday, only two aircraft completed scheduled trips while 34 flights were called off, leaving large numbers of people waiting to return to Taiwan’s main island, per CNA. With ferries between Keelung and Matsu unlikely to operate before Wednesday due to rough seas, aviation has become the main channel for clearing the backlog.
Mandarin Airlines added two extra Taipei Songshan–Nangan rotations, bringing Tuesday’s total to 18 flights. At the same time, military aircraft departed from Taiwan’s main island to shuttle passengers in the afternoon.
Officials said regular civil aviation operations have resumed, but the additional flights and military transport were arranged to speed up the movement of stranded travelers.
