TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Tuesday hosted Japanese competitive eater Angela Sato at the Presidential Office for the Lunar New Year holiday.
The visit was part of a “100 Dumplings for the New Year” event on the first day of the holiday, per CNA. Lai welcomed Sato and YouTuber Iku in Japanese and toured the Presidential Office with them.
Sato, a popular Japanese YouTuber, is known for her astonishing appetite and appreciation for diverse cuisines, per RTI. She said meeting the president was the happiest moment of her life, even more exciting than winning eating contests.
The group later shared Taiwanese dumplings, which resemble gold ingots and symbolize prosperity. Lai prepared 100 dumplings for Sato and chatted with her about her hometown of Hokkaido.
Sato brought gifts from Hokkaido, including red bean buns and Shiroi Koibito cookies, while Lai gave Taiwanese snacks such as pineapple cakes and mullet roe. They also spoke about how Taiwan and Japan have supported each other during natural disasters and trade challenges.
Sato said she hopes to promote Taiwanese cuisine in Japan and expressed interest in visiting night markets. She finished all the dumplings with ease, impressing Lai, who said he had seen her eating competitions.
