TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Navy said Tuesday that its guided-missile frigate Feng Jia has upgraded its defense system to better counter aerial, surface, and underwater threats.
According to the Military News Agency, the ship is a former US Navy Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate delivered to Taiwan in 2017 before entering service with the Navy’s 146th Fleet. The crew conducts readiness drills and peacetime-to-wartime transition exercises to strengthen joint capabilities, per CNA.
The Feng Jia is equipped with an MK-13 missile launcher capable of firing Standard-1 surface-to-air and Harpoon anti-ship missiles. It also carries a 76mm rapid-fire gun and a Phalanx close-in weapon system to build a layered air and surface defense network.
For anti-submarine warfare, the vessel is fitted with MK-32 torpedo tubes and MK-46 torpedoes integrated with the AN/SQQ-89 undersea warfare system. The system combines passive towed sonar and sonobuoys to detect and assess underwater threats in real time.
The frigate is also equipped with an MK-36 decoy launching system to counter incoming missiles.
Captain Liu (劉) said the crew has completed major exercises and maritime missions since commissioning in November 2018. He said sailors will continue to safeguard Taiwan’s waters with professionalism and readiness.
