TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A suspect in a Yilan package explosion case that injured two people on Friday has been ordered held in detention by the court.
A blast injured a pair of siblings surnamed Hung (洪), both around 70, after they opened a package, causing multiple injuries to multiple limbs. Both were treated in the hospital and remain in stable condition, according to CNA.
The package had an address but no postal stamp or phone number. This led police to believe the suspect personally delivered it to the Hungs' home in a targeted attack rather than a random act, according to UDN.
Late Friday night, police arrested a suspect surnamed Wu (吳), who is skilled in electrical work. Investigators said Wu had a prior investment dispute with the son of one of the injured siblings, which may have provided a motive.
Following questioning, prosecutors said Wu is suspected of attempted murder and violations of firearms and explosives laws. Given the severity of the charges and the risk of evidence tampering or repeated offenses, prosecutors requested that Wu be remanded in custody without visitation or communication privileges.
Wu denied the charges. The Yilan District Court approved Wu’s remand incommunicado, citing strong evidence and the risk of tampering.
