TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Shoushan Zoo in Kaohsiung said farewell to the elephant named Ali this weekend.
The African elephant passed away peacefully on Saturday morning at the age of 52. The zoo released a statement expressing sadness for her passing, and gratitude for the many years of happy memories she provided to visitors and staff, reported UDN.
Despite her advanced age, Ali did not appear to have any health issues or display any abnormal behavior in recent weeks. The exact cause of her death will be determined after an examination at the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology’s College of Veterinary Medicine, reported CNA.
Ali arrived in Taiwan in 1978, becoming a local star at the Shoushan Zoo over the course of her lifetime. She was resident at the Shoushan Zoo through numerous renovations, and her presence was enjoyed by multiple generations of families in Kaohsiung.
According to the caretakers, Ali was an intelligent, sensitive, and also had a bit of a mischievous streak. She would reportedly test the attentiveness and patience of caretakers, and only those who gained her trust were permitted to get close.
In a post on social media, the zoo thanked Ali for allowing visitors to witness the wisdom and gentleness of African elephants. With the death of Ali, Shoushan Zoo no longer has any elephants under its care.
