TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Cabinet Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) pledged to continue building up Taiwan’s Coast Guard on Saturday.
Speaking at Taipei Port, Cho said that in addition to expanding the coast guard fleet, the government will ramp up improvements to facilities and conduct a comprehensive review of personnel benefits so service members can perform their duties with greater resolve, CNA reported.
Cho said that Chinese gray zone incidents continue to occur. Although China’s coast guard force is larger, Taiwanese Coast Guard personnel are not intimidated by any threats and remain on the front line of defense. The premier expressed his gratitude for their dedication to protecting the nation.
In 2025, the Coast Guard conducted 805 patrol actions to expel Chinese coast guard intrusions, said Ocean Affairs Council Minister Kuan Bi-ling (管碧玲), per Nikkei Asia.
The OAC, which manages the Coast Guard, has secured over NT$29.5 billion (US$935 million) for new radar systems and a fleet of 40 new patrol boats. Taiwan’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities will be greatly improved by 2027, according to Deputy Director-General of the Coast Guard Hsieh Ching-chin (謝慶欽).
On Friday, the Coast Guard received its 11th Anping-class patrol vessel, Lanyu, per Liberty Times. It has a top speed of up to 74 kph and a range of 3,704 kilometers.
