TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun (鄭麗君) said Thursday the US will implement tariff reductions under the Taiwan-US trade pact before review by the Legislative Yuan.
Following the signing of the deal, a reporter asked if Taiwan was concerned that future US tariff changes could threaten the reduced rates, per CNA. Cheng said that toward the end of the negotiations, Taiwan sought clarification from the US on how tariff reductions would be implemented.
During the fifth round, the US said it preferred reductions to take effect only after legislative approval. She said Taiwan pushed back on that requirement and advocated for the tariff reductions to take effect as quickly as possible after signing.
She said the US agreed to the proposed expedited signing. Under this arrangement, the tariff reductions will take effect first through publication in the US Federal Register, while the agreement is submitted to Taiwan’s legislature for review
During negotiations with multiple countries and economic blocs, the US has faced delays in agreements taking effect. In some cases, it has responded by increasing tariffs, with the rate on South Korea raised to 25% on Jan. 26 because its legislature had not enacted the trade deal, per CNN.
