TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on Thursday expressed condolences to the victims of Canada’s second-deadliest school shooting, which left nine dead and 27 injured.
The mass shooting occurred on Tuesday in Tumbler Ridge, a small town in northeastern British Columbia, per CNA. Police confirmed Wednesday that the suspect is 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, but said it is too early to determine the shooter’s motive.
In a post on social media platform X, Lai said, “Our hearts go out to the community of Tumbler Ridge following the recent tragedy.” He added that the people of Taiwan extend their deepest condolences to the victims’ families and wish for a speedy recovery to all those injured.
“Our thoughts are with the people of Canada during this time,” Lai concluded.
