TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Shipbuilder CSBC Corporation, Taiwan, began work Thursday on the third of six high-latitude offshore patrol vessels for the Coast Guard Administration.
The aim of the project is to improve protection of Taiwan’s fishing fleet and strengthen law enforcement at sea, per CNA. The budget for the six ships, to be completed by 2032, is set at NT$11.7 billion (US$372.56 million).
All ships in the program will be built at CSBC’s Kaohsiung shipyard. The vessels will allow the Coast Guard to expand fisheries management duties worldwide, including as far as the southern Indian Ocean, CSBC said.
The ship is an upgrade from previous models due to the widespread use of steel in its structure, its maximum displacement of 5,000 metric tons, and strengthened equipment capabilities, according to the shipbuilder.
