TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Economic Affairs said Wednesday that it added 18 high-tech products to its export control list to curb proliferation risks.
Among the newly added items are semiconductor-related equipment such as tools for CMOS integrated circuits, cryogenic cooling systems, electron microscopes, and low-temperature wafer testing systems, per CNA. These technologies are considered sensitive due to their potential military applications.
The ministry said the revisions were made to keep Taiwan’s controlled items consistent with major international export control frameworks. These include the Wassenaar Arrangement and the Nuclear Suppliers Group, among others.
Most of the revisions involved explanatory notes and editorial corrections. The ministry said there were no major institutional changes.
The ministry clarified that regulation does not equal a ban, per Liberty Times. Exporters must apply in advance for a strategic high-tech commodities export permit from the International Trade Administration.
Exports are not automatically prohibited, and approvals will be granted if no weapons proliferation risks are identified, it explained.
Officials said the lists are reviewed annually and adjusted in coordination with partner countries. This latest update included 127 revisions.
