TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Railway Bureau will continue working with Taiwan Railway to advance rail infrastructure projects and enhance the rail system using smart technologies and carbon-reduction measures.
At a press conference on Wednesday, the bureau said that it will continue enhancing its rail management system, including upgrading communication technologies to monitor trains and prevent accidents. To advance key rail technologies, it aims to complete R&D projects on train wheel assemblies, signaling systems, and axle counters by 2028, per CNA.
The bureau noted that it has issued guidelines for carbon reduction in railway construction projects. Taiwan Railway added that it is replacing vehicles with lightweight electric models, enhancing train energy monitoring, and installing rooftop solar panels at select stations.
In the fourth quarter of last year, the company completed greenhouse gas inventories for 32 stations. By May, it aims to complete carbon audits for stations across Taiwan and upload the records to the Ministry of Environment’s platform.
The first phase of the underground railway project in Tainan is scheduled to open by the end of this year. The bureau hopes the project will help optimize traffic and promote urban development. The new Tainan Station will be built behind the existing station.
The bureau said the project spans 8.23 km and will include two new stations along the route. Nine level crossings, eight underpasses, and four overpasses along the line will be removed.
In response to the Taoyuan railway underground project, the city’s Pingzhen temporary station is set to open in October, the bureau added. The Zhongli temporary station opened in June 2024, and the old station has been removed.
The Taoyuan underground line will span approximately 17.9 km, with Taoyuan, Neili, and Zhongli Stations being rebuilt. Five new stations will be added along the route, and the line is expected to open in 2033.
