TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taipei Deputy Mayor Lee Shu-chuan (李四川) said Wednesday he would tender his resignation later this month while hinting at joining the race for mayor of New Taipei.
In a post on his Facebook page, he wrote he had told Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) Wednesday afternoon about his intention to resign in late February. Lee has been widely expected to join the race to succeed New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜).
He described himself as a New Taipei citizen, thanking residents for their support in opinion polls. He added he would return to the city from March. If the KMT nominated him, he would seek a way of cooperating with TPP Chair Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌), he said.
The KMT is the only major party not to have selected a candidate for the Nov. 28 election as yet, with Lee and New Taipei Deputy Mayor Liu Ho-jan (劉和然) seen as the main contenders. The DPP picked Legislator Su Chiao-hui (蘇巧慧), the daughter of former Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌).
Lee’s announcement followed the signing of a land surface rights agreement between Nvidia Corp. Taipei City Government Wednesday morning, per UDN. The deputy mayor said he played a key role in talks leading to the accord, which will see the AI pioneer build a Taiwan headquarters building in the city’s Beitou Shilin Technology Park.
