TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan will continue to advance pragmatic bilateral ties with Honduras without any preset conditions, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday.
Honduras Vice President Maria Antonieta Mejia Sanchez said on Monday that restoring diplomatic relations with Taiwan would be a gradual process, per Honduran newspaper La Tribuna. “All we want at this moment is to seek the best diplomatic relations that will benefit Honduras,” Mejia said.
The vice president said foreign policy decisions will be made responsibly “without haste or romantic decisions.”
The foreign ministry said it has taken note of Mejia’s remarks and will proceed to engage with Honduras based on equality and mutual benefit, per CNA. Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) said last month that with renewed US engagement in the Western Hemisphere, Taiwan–Honduras relations could make further progress.
Lin added that Taiwan has been promoting its Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project among neighboring diplomatic allies, including Belize and Guatemala, and that Honduras has taken note of those efforts.
Honduras President Nasry Asfura said he is reassessing Honduras’ foreign policy and considering switching diplomatic recognition from Beijing back to Taipei. The previous president, Xiomara Castro, severed relations with Taiwan in favor of China in 2023.
