TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) praised the progress of Taiwan’s first domestically built submarine, the Narwhal, on Sunday.
CSBC Corp. released a video documenting tests conducted between Jan. 29 and Feb. 6, including the submarine’s first shallow-water dive, rudder and steering controls, antenna deployment, periscope operations, and decoy launches. Lai said in a Facebook post that the video allows everyone to see the results of sea trials for Taiwan’s first submarine.
Behind these achievements are the efforts and professional dedication of the Navy, CSBC, and industry supply-chain partners, Lai said. Prioritizing safety and quality, the government will complete performance verification and eventually deliver the vessel to the Navy, he said.
He encouraged the public to support all partners involved in the project, “so the world can see Taiwan’s determination to defend our homeland.”
The Narwhal conducted its first underwater test on Jan. 29 and has completed four underwater trials so far. Deep-diving tests at depths of more than 200 meters will be carried out later, and handover to the Navy is expected in June, CSBC said.
